The first recorded game of skate soccer occurred in 1988 in Lagos, Nigeria. The diaspora from Nigeria took the game to countries throughout West Africa where it was informally played. In early 2009, Albert K. Frimpong, who heads up the Sports and Youth Development Organization in Accra, decided he wanted to help the polio survivors he regularly saw begging at the traffic lights. His initial attempts of engagement were rebuffed as these young men thought Albert was a policeman and didn’t trust him.
After convincing them he was a friend, they set up a meeting and it was decided a skate soccer team would be formed.
On Sundays, the players are divided into two teams of five for a fiercely competitive match.
